Tessa woke the next morning to brilliant rays of sunlight streaming through the windows of her room, the maid humming happily while she laid out clothes.

Tessa stretched, realising she was still in her dress. Then she remembered why. She had a vague recollection of Peyton carrying her to bed. But there was nothing vague about why he’d done so. That was very clear. Tessa wondered how quickly she could get rid of the maid. She devised a short errand and breathed a sigh of relief when the maid left the room to carry it out.

Oh, lord, what had she done? She was glad no one was there to see her embarrassment. She and Peyton had made love on the study floor. Strangely enough, that wasn’t the embarrassing part. She’d not been ashamed of anything they’d done last night and that was still unswervingly true this morning. No, it wasn’t the nakedness or the physical intimacy which caused her to blush. It was the motivations for it.

What must Peyton think of her? Did he think she’d seduced him? Tessa recalled her words—‘make me feel safe’. Did he think that had been a ploy? A flirtation? This morning, she regretted the words. She had not meant them as any kind of coy game. She’d not suspected such words would lead them to the situation they found themselves in. But perhaps Peyton had taken them as such.

It was embarrassing to think Peyton might have taken pity on her. Surely that wasn’t the case? Surely Peyton, with all his stiff-necked notions about propriety, didn’t make a practice out of bedding young women on study floors because he pitied them?

No, that notion didn’t fit at all. Tessa would have been relieved if it hadn’t led to another notion. Peyton was a stickler for propriety. He was a gentleman of the highest order in both title and behaviour. She rather hoped such attitudes wouldn’t lead to an embarrassing proposal. Peyton might feel compelled to make some kind of outlandish offer, all for the sake of her lost virginity.

She needed to make sure he didn’t have a chance to do that. Today would be difficult to navigate. She would be with Peyton all day. The Royal Academy had its annual exhibit today and there was a ball afterwards to mark the opening. He would be by her side all day and all night. Fortunately, they’d be in very public venues and surrounded by people. With luck, there would be very little opportunity to hold a private conversation.

Tessa threw back the covers and began to strip out of her dress before her maid came back. Today would be a very demanding day.
